Former Chelsea midfielder Tony Cascarino believes one area Chelsea have cause for concern is the lack of firepower in attack.
Gonzalo Higuain has returned to Juventus after failing to impress during his 6-month loan spell at the club last season while Alvaro Morata, who left the club on an 18-month loan deal in January, doesn’t want to return to Chelsea this summer.
With Chelsea unable to make signings this summer due to the transfer ban, Frank Lampard will have to work with Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi.
“The main area of contention is up front. Gonzalo Higuaín has gone back to Juventus after his loan spell and Álvaro Morata is still at Atletico Madrid for another season,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.
“That leaves Lampard with Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham as his strikers for the season.
“We know Giroud’s qualities of being able to win the ball and link play well and I have my doubts about Batshuayi’s ability at the highest level.”
Meanwhile, Cascarino believes Chelsea have a stronger squad than Manchester United and Arsenal despite Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid this summer.
“I may have been sounding caution to the Chelsea board but don’t get me wrong — [Lampard] still has a host of star players and lots of established internationals,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.
“I think the squad is stronger than Arsenal’s and Manchester United’s even without Eden Hazard.
“N’Golo Kanté is one of the world’s best midfielders, Kepa Arrizabalaga is a talented young goalkeeper and Willian and new signing Christian Pulisic will be a threat to any team.”
