If former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri had remained at the club, Chelsea might have lost the services of quality youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The 18-year-old was subject of a January transfer move, with German champions Bayern Munich keen to sign the Chelsea academy product. The Chelsea youngster even handed the club a transfer request, and rejected all moves to sign a new contract.

Chelsea were desperate to tie Hudson-Odoi down and prevent him from leaving the club, but the bad news was that he had only a year left to go on his contract, meaning he could even leave for free.

Chelsea are keen to make use of the academy players and want a passage from the academy into the first team, but past club managers have been reluctant to do so, and Hudson-Odoi is rated as one of the hottest properties to come out of the Chelsea academy in recent years – and the club weren’t ready to lose him for any price.

Reports in Germany suggested that Bayern were preparing to make a fresh £45m bid for the teenager this summer – a £10m increase on their highest bid last January after failing in their attempt to sign Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

But now, fresh reports claim that Bayern have given up on signing Hudson-Odoi and are now actively pursuing alternative transfer targets.

Hudson-Odoi is set to sign a five-year deal with Chelsea in what would be a huge boost for Frank Lampard’s new reign at the club.

The youngster is in advanced talks with Chelsea and was convinced his future is at Chelsea after Lampard’s appointment as Chelsea boss.

The appointment of Lampard has ensured Chelsea didn’t lose Hudson-Odoi, and all Lampard did to convince the highly rated teenager to remain at the club, was assure him that he would be a key player for Chelsea next season – a move that Sarri wasn’t ready to undertake.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount have signed new contracts, and Hudson-Odoi will be next, as Chelsea academy seem to take centre stage in the senior team.
