January signing Christian Pulisic was in action for the first time for Chelsea today in the 1-0 defeat to Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale.
Pulisic was introduced as a 65th minute substitute for Tiemoue Bakayoko against the J League side and immediately caught the eye with his dribbling ability and willingness to take opponents on.
Although Pulisic was on the losing side, he showed a glimpse of what he can do as Chelsea boss Frank Lampard deployed the young forward in the three positions behind the striker, and he featured on both the right and left side during his short time on the pitch.
Chelsea fans have been desperate to find out the player’s shirt number since the end of last season, especially with the number 10 jersey vacant following Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid.
Chelsea have yet to officially confirm the squad numbers for the new season but Pulisic wore the No.24 shirt on his debut for the Blues.
Speaking after the game, Lampard revealed he was impressed with Pulisic’s cameo appearance.
“Good, good,” Lampard told Chelsea TV when asked to assess Pulisic’s cameo.
“He’s only been here couple of days in terms of training with the rest of the squad.
“He impressed, he’s confident on the ball and I thought he could have had a penalty in the second half.
“He wants to take players on and he is a player the fans are going to like.
“He will adapt slowly but they way he has trained the last few days with his personality I am really pleased.”
