Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was unable to watch any of Chelsea’s games last season due to his issues with the UK government.
The Russian billionaire has restrictions that have limited his movement into the UK, but he was able to watch his team live in Austria as Chelsea defeated RB Salzburg 5-3.
Chelsea skipper Frank Lampard definitely knows Abramovich from his playing days, and he has revealed that he spoke with the Chelsea owner after the game. Lampard admitted that Abramovich was excited with the way the team played as Chelsea’s attack was just too fluid for Salzburg to handle.
Speaking about his conversation with Abramovich, Lampard said after the game: “It was good to see him. I obviously know him from my playing days. I have a very close relationship with Marina [Granovskaia] on a club level but I knew I was going to speak with the owner in pre-season and I have spoken to him this evening.
“He was happy with the excitement of the game I think.”
Abramovich took the risk to employ an inexperienced Lampard to lead Chelsea this season, and reports claim that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had assured Lampard of his job and he’d be given a free hand in his first season with no specific targets, barring the worst-case scenario of a relegation battle. So, as long as Chelsea are not in relegation waters next season, Lampard’s job as Chelsea manager is safe.
