Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Chelsea fans would have preferred the club appointed Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers instead of Frank Lampard as Chelsea boss.
According to Merson, the former Liverpool boss would have been the right person for the Chelsea job instead of Lampard.
Merson told the Daily Star: “There’s a lot of pressure on Frank Lampard to get that winning mentality.
“They’ve lost twice now and conceded six goals which isn’t great.
“They need to start well at home, or people will start questioning why they didn’t offer Brendan Rodgers the job. I’ve said before I think he would have been perfect.
“I just think none of the top name managers wanted the Chelsea job.
“They’ve sold their best player by a million miles and can’t replace him because of the ban.
“Plus there’s a lot of pressure and no job security. I don’t think people were queuing up to take it.
“Chelsea should win this game, but it’s a hard one for them.”
Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud doesn’t agree with Merson as he believes Lampard is the right man for the Chelsea job due to his positive approach.
“He always tries to be very positive,” Giroud said. “He’s not going to be tough with us when we’re not doing well. Neither is he going to get carried away by the mood when we are doing well.
“He is always trying to analyse the situation and he said he was very proud of our performance after the games.
“He said it was tough to lose like that, but we need to keep our heads up but, one more time, he said he was proud of us.
“We have good hope to look forward and win this first game at home will be very important for us.
“It’s sad to start the season like that, it’s been quite tough, but we need to recover now and keep our heads up.”
