Danny Drinkwater wasn’t involved in Chelsea’s final pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach as the future of the 29-year-old seems like it’ll be away from Stamford Bridge.

Drinkwater didn’t make any competitive appearance under former boss Maurizio Sarri, despite being a £35m acquisition under Antonio Conte.

Drinkwater was a key part of Leicester City’s title winning squad in 2016, but he has failed to make an impact since joining Chelsea.

Despite not featuring for Chelsea, Drinkwater was unable to find a way out of Chelsea last year, and reports also claim that the 29-year-old is struggling to find suitors. It is believed Drinkwater’s £100k a week wages has been a deterrent for buying clubs and Chelsea might be forced to into subsidising his departure.

According to Daily Mail, Brighton are interested in signing Danny Drinkwater on a season long loan deal from Chelsea.

Besides missing the game against Monchengladbach, Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko didn’t make the trip to face RB Salzburg.

Speaking about the absence of the duo, Lampard revealed that he is at the stage where he is close to knowing his team for the first Premier League game, but no doors are closed yet as he implied that he will have to make do without Bakayoko and Drinkwater.

The Blues boss said: “We have a squad with a lot of players and getting to this point now, I can’t bring everyone and give everyone 90 minutes so there are players who have stayed back to train rather than travel and not play.

“So I would not read too much into it in one game, we are a work in progress with this squad.”
