Former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has claimed he turned down the chance to become Chelsea boss this summer after Maurizio Sarri left the club for Juventus.
The 65-year-old was available after stepping down as coach of Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal after falling out with the club’s board.
Jesus claims Chelsea and Newcastle United were interested in his services before he opted to join Brazilian club Flamengo.
In an interview with the Brazilian channel Fox TV, the Portuguese coach explained that he could have been the successor of Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge.
“If it were for the money, I could have stayed at Al-Hilal. My agent wouldn’t want me to come to Brazil. I could also have gone to clubs in England,” said Jesus, according to Daily Mail.
Jesus won three league titles in six years during his time in Portugal.
