Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante played the final 17 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-2 preseason draw with Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.

It was his first appearance for the Blues since the Europa League final victory over Arsenal in May due to a knee injury he suffered before the Europa League final.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard revealed after the match that Kante only played for 17 minutes because he doesn’t want to rush back the midfielder.

“N’Golo is working a little bit more now [after the game] and it was just to give him the feeling of match time, as it has been awkward with his injury,” said Lampard. “I wanted him to feel it and us to see it.

“Who knows if he can be fit for next weekend or not? We’ll work hard for that. But we have to be a bit careful as he has played so many games over the last three seasons. We don’t want to rush him.”

Lampard also believes Chelsea should have won the game against Borussia Monchengladbach.

“I think we should have won,” declared Lampard after the game.

“I was not happy with the first-half performance, we conceded two bad goals, one was our mistake, the other was a counter-attack, and we weren’t as we should be in the first half.

“At half-time I asked for a reaction and the team gave a big reaction. We could have scored a lot more goals, their goalkeeper has been fantastic for them. I think we should have won but it was a very tough game, a good exercise for us against a very good team.”
