Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante replaced Jorginho for the last 20 minutes of Chelsea’s 4-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard opted against playing Kante from the start against Manchester United because the midfielder wasn’t fully fit.
Kante missed much of Chelsea’s preseason as he was recovering from a knee injury he suffered before Chelsea’s Europa League final victory over Arsenal.
Ahead of Chelsea’s Super Cup clash against Liverpool on Wednesday, Lampard has revealed Chelsea will be without Kante after the midfielder suffered a minor injury setback.
Lampard was criticised by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho for not playing Kante from the start against Manchester United. Kante’s latest injury set-back will justify Lampard’s decision not to start the France international against Manchester United.
Lampard said: “Kante has a small injury and I will make a decision with that with him.
“Kante was purely [on the bench] because he had an injury. I am very aware of how important he is.
“He picked up another small injury in the game, so we are assessing that.”
Kante’s injury set-back will be a huge blow for Lampard as the Chelsea boss would have been hoping to play Kante against Liverpool in the Super Cup.
