This weekend marks the last weekend of club football as leagues will take a break all over the world to give way for country football.
A number of Chelsea players were called up on international duty, and Chelsea youngster Mason Mount also got a call up to the Three Lions alongside Ross Barkley.
Frank Lampard understands what it means to get an England call-up having amassed over a century appearances for England, and has hailed Mount and also Barkley for their call-ups.
“Delighted for Mason,” said Lampard about his call-up. “It’s great recognition. He had it at Derby and unfortunately got injured and missed out. I’m delighted for him after the start he’s had.
“With Tammy, there is competition up front. He’s had a good start, good goals last week. Hopefully it’s a matter of time, that’s Gareth’s choice and with the competition that’s tough.
“I’m really pleased for Mason, and Ross who is there as well.”
England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Mount got his call up on merit.
“Mason Mount’s been one of the outstanding players in the league already this season, so we brought both [him and Maddison] in last October as much for the experience as anything,” said Southgate.
“This time in particular, in Mason’s case, as the younger one, he’s in on merit. Simple as that. He looks like he’s threatening the goal every game he plays.
“I’ve watched him develop through our youth teams since he was 16 and he’s been an outstanding player at every age group. He’s not in on the back of three games at Chelsea. He’s in on the back of a year in the Eredivisie, which was outstanding; a very successful year with Derby [County]; European Under-19 champion with us.
“So he keeps improving and achieving at every level he is tested at, and that has been the same at the beginning of this season.”
