After Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard claimed he more or less knows his starting XI against Manchester United in our Premier League opener.
“I more or less know my team selection but it is a long week to come and players have to train every day to get themselves in the team, so the door isn’t shut on that,” Lampard told Chelsea’s official website.
Lampard also gave a hint that Chelsea youngster Mason Mount could start against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Mount played under Lampard at Derby on loan last season and the young midfielder has impressed during preseason. He has scored three goals during preseason, prompting Lampard to think long and hard about his first XI selection for the United game.
Lampard said: “He’s done a lot. Coming back here, obviously I worked with him last year.
“I’m really happy with how he’s trained and his status within the group.
“The players recognise quality instantly, but they also recognise work rate and character.
“Mason’s got all of those and he’s given me a problem. Ross Barkley’s also had a good pre-season and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be back later on.
“It’s good because they’re all adaptable and can play in a variety of positions amongst themselves.
“I couldn’t ask for more from what Mason’s done.”
