Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has been out since last season, having suffered a knee injury that has kept him out since April.
The German is arguably Chelsea’s best defender with his no-nonsense style of defending, but injury kept him out of the team during pre-season and he’s yet to feature for Frank Lampard this season.
However, the Blues boss has now revealed that Rudiger is back from injury but isn’t match fit. Rudiger was on the bench in the Super Cup final against Liverpool, and Lampard believes he’d be fit soon.
Lampard told the media: “Rudiger is training. Whether he’s completely match fit is a different thing, for the same reasons as Callum, a bit of conditioning [needed]. Willian is probably closer. They are both in contention for the weekend.”
Rudiger is expected to return for Chelsea in the Premier League clash against Wolves after the international break.
Former Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola has told Lampard to replace Zouma with Rudiger once he’s back.
Zola told beIN Sports: “Certainly Rudiger has got more experience.
“I think he has a better understanding with Christensen.
“I believe if they want to play out from the back, Rudiger and Christensen will be more suitable.”
