After the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, Frank Lampard’s side was written off, and many expected Liverpool to thrash Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final at the Besiktas Park Stadium in Istanbul.
It was an end to end game between Liverpool and Chelsea, with both teams having the opportunity to win the game in regular time and extra time.
After 120 minutes of intense football with the scores tied at 2-2, it was Liverpool who won the game 5-4 on penalties as Tammy Abraham missed his spot kick to hand Liverpool a hard fought victory.
Chelsea matched Liverpool toe to toe, and it was a different game from what everyone was expecting. Although, there’s still room for improvement in Lampard’s side, this Chelsea side will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.
Ahead of the Super Cup clash against Liverpool, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard insisted he was optimistic because he believes in his players. Lampard never looked down on his team despite the loss to United, and the players have proven that they have the confidence of the manager.
Lampard said: “I’m optimistic because I believe in the players. We’re here in the final because we deserve to be due to the achievements of the players and the club last season. We understand the quality of an opponent like Liverpool because they deservingly won the Champions League this year.
“They have a good manager and players so it will be a test but I know if we play at our best then we can win the match.”
