After missing out on the Champions League last season, Chelsea will partake in the tournament this season, in Frank Lampard’s first season in charge of the club.
Maurizio Sarri led Chelsea to a third place finish last term before deciding to call it quits and make a move to Serie A side Juventus at the end of last season.
It was an all English final in the Champions League last season, as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 to become European champions.
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler doesn’t believe that there will be an all English final in 2019/20, and has tipped La Liga side Atletico to be the surprise package.
“My career as an expert tipster never took off, but, if I’m offering a decent bet this season at reasonable odds, then it would be on the Champions League,” Fowler said, as reported by the Mirror.
“Liverpool know how to get to the final, obviously, and so do Real Madrid.
“Manchester City are desperate to lift the trophy and I expect Pep Guardiola to throw resources at it, by resting players in the Premier League. Barcelona will also be out to make amends for their shock exit at Anfield last season.
“But I have a surprise choice to give you a run for your money – Atletico Madrid. True, they have lost Rodri to City and Antoine Griezmann to Barca this summer.
“But they have signed wonderkid Joao Felix from Benfica, Marcos Llorente from Real Madrid, Mario Hermoso from Espanyol and Kieran Trippier from Tottenham.
“And, in Diego Simeone, they have a manager who knows how to win things.”
The draw for the group stage of the Champions League takes place on Thursday 29th August in Monaco.
Following the appointment of Lampard as the new Chelsea boss last month, Fowler insisted that Lampard can take a cue from Pep Guardiola and be successful despite his inexperience as a manager.
Fowler told Daily Mirror: “You need a manager who can create the right atmosphere to get the best out of his squad, who knows what they can and can’t relate to, who knows what works with them and what doesn’t.
“This is why the ‘lack of experience’ argument is nonsense. Who has more experience of what makes Chelsea’s current group of players tick than Frank Lampard?
“A young Pep Guardiola went into Barcelona without experience and created the best team they’ve ever had.
“He did that by accommodating the talents that people said couldn’t fit together, in a system that made the most of their strengths and removed weaknesses.
“I’m not saying Lampard is Guardiola, but I am saying fair play to Chelsea and there should be more appointments like him.
“They have taken a risk, yes, but why not? Maybe it’s time Chelsea looked at the bigger picture and the longer term. They have to stop appointing a new manager almost every season.”
