Chelsea currently have four players who are out injured, with Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and N’Golo Kante all out injured.
All four are yet to be fully fit, with Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante currently the closest to returning back to full action.
Rudiger has been sidelined with a meniscus injury, which ironically happened in the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford towards the end of last season.
The German has been doing some light running outside at the training ground all summer in a bid to step up his fitness and has missed all of Chelsea’s pre-season campaign so far.
Although Rudiger won’t be part of the team to play at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ a week on Sunday, the German international appears to be closing in on a return to full training and has taken to social media to reveal how much progress he has made.
“Always focused on progress,” Rudiger tweeted.
“Taking another big step next week: training with the team again.”
Lampard currently has Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and David Luiz at his disposal in the centre-back position, and it’s looking like Zouma and Luiz will be his first choice centre-back pairing ahead of the new season. Rudiger will have to make a return quickly and fight his way back into the Chelsea team.
