Virgil van Dijk is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world at the moment, and played a key role in Liverpool’s defence as they went on to win the UEFA Champions League last season and claimed the second spot in the Premier League.

Pedro and Van Dijk will lock horns tonight in the Super Cup clash in Turkey, and Pedro has hailed the Dutchman ahead of the game. Pedro believes only Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos can compete with Van Dijk.

Pedro said: “At this moment these two players are on the top in this position.

“Two very good central defenders. I know Sergio Ramos very well. A good defender. Great with the ball, good passes.

“Virgil Van Dijk is the same.

“So strong, good in the air, good in passes as well, scores goals. They are two big players.

“I think it’s good. Van Dijk is in a good moment, he has made good season with Liverpool, a good season for them, winning the Champions League. He’s in a good moment.”

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes Chelsea did themselves in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Shearer said that Chelsea players delayed the pass when the Blues got into promising positions with Pedro named as one of the culprits.

“I thought what United were also better at than Chelsea, particularly the second half, is that killer pass,” Shearer told Premier League Productions.

“When they got into the final third, I just felt as if Chelsea got into some good positions but they just delayed that pass.

“Pedro once or twice in that second half could have picked his head up quicker and played the pass quickly.

“United did that far better than Chelsea in the second half and got the rewards.”

Pedro must up his game tonight so Chelsea can come back home with the Super Cup trophy.
