Chelsea have been written off by many following the departure of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and the club’s inability to sign a replacement for the Belgian.
According to former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, Chelsea’s Super Cup performance against Liverpool proves there’s enough quality in the Chelsea team despite the departure of Hazard.
Smith believes players like N’Golo Kante, Pedro and Christian Pulisic can be important players for the Blues this season.
Smith told Standard Sport: “It’s not often you can lose a showpiece final and still feel relieved, but I don’t think Frank Lampard would have been overly upset about losing to Liverpool on penalties in the Super Cup.
“His Chelsea team, after all, had gone toe-to-toe in Istanbul with one of Europe’s best. To do that following Sunday’s 4-0 reverse at Old Trafford would have pleased him no end.
“It was a welcome reminder of the quality to hand at a time when everyone is wondering how they will cope without Eden Hazard.
“No one player is going to replace the Belgian, but when you’ve got Pedro and N’Golo Kante performing as they did in Istanbul and Christian Pulisic adding valuable pace and goal threat on his debut, the team’s situation is probably better than first appeared.
“Lampard has plenty to work with, even if the centre-forward shortfall remains unresolved. A choice between Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham doesn’t compare favourably to other top-six rivals.”
