Chelsea legend Ashley Cole has backed Chelsea youngster Mason Mount to become a top player under Frank Lampard.
Mount shone under Lampard at Derby County last season, scoring 11 goals in 44 appearances and he has carried that form into the season, scoring twice in four Premier League appearances for Chelsea.
“Obviously I had the pleasure to play with him at Derby last season and, for me, he was our best and main player,” Cole said, according to Metro.
“He’s definitely matured and improved from the time I saw him with Chelsea’s Under-9s. It’s down to him now.
“He’s a player that always comes into training early, he gives 100 per cent in training and, for me, that’s what you need to be a top player is a great mentality and he has that.
“It’s down to him if he wants to work hard and improve under Frank and, of course, he’s going to get chances.”
Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen believes Chelsea will reap the rewards of Lampard’s trust in young players like Mason Mount next season.
“I think next season we will see the benefits of the experience that these players are going to get this season. All the youngsters excite me,” Gudjohnsen told Goal.
“The bad thing was that sometimes the young players wanted to leave Chelsea because they didn’t believe in a first-team opportunity. Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi got their chance. New players are coming in now. They have the feeling this is their time to shine.
“The players have a great opportunity. It is about developing and becoming the players that everyone expected them to be at a young age. I have the sense that Frank will do the same with Abraham, Mount and Tomori.
“He is fearless to give them confidence and believing in them to play. If he is given the time to do that, then I think the benefits from that will be bigger than just focusing on results this year.”
