Ross Barkley’s penalty miss late in the game against Valencia cost his side as the Blues will have at least gotten a draw from this game.
Chelsea had a good game against Valencia and were the better side in this fixture, but Frank Lampard’s side lost to a 74th minute Rodrigo strike.
A bizarre incident happened when Barkley avoided the demands of teammates Willian and Jorginho to step up and play a late penalty that was given to the team after a VAR decision. Barkley eventually missed the penalty and it cost the team.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard failed to criticise Barkley when speaking to the media, and now skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has rather chosen to defend the 25-year-old in front of the media.
“It is hard to take because through the game we had better chances and controlled the game,” he told BT Sport.
“It is the Champions League and it can be decided in small details. They score a goal and we could not convert our chances.
“Ross is one of the best penalty takers in the team and one who takes them. He had the confidence and he was unlucky hitting the bar. They [the other players around him] were encouraging him to have the confidence to score. There was high expectation. They were trying to get him into the best condition. Hopefully next time it goes in.
“We are trying to build something special. We have a young squad. But we need to get results straight away. It is a lesson we have to learn as a team. We still have five games to qualify.”
