Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been heavily criticised by fans for his performances in the Chelsea shirt this season and this has alerted several clubs in Spain.
Azpilicueta was considered to be at fault for the first goal conceded in the 2-2 draw to Sheffield United after he was easily beaten.
According to The Sun, La Liga sides Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are keeping a close eye on the defender’s blip in form and his forthcoming battle to remain first choice right back.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is fast-tracking Chelsea youngster Reece James, who impressed while on loan at Wigan last season, back to fitness after ankle surgery in the summer.
James could be ready to play in Chelsea’s next Premier League game at Wolves on September 14 and Lampard reportedly plans on making him his first choice right-back over Azpilicueta after he proves his fitness.
This will pile the pressure on Azpilicueta, who has been at Chelsea for seven years and is the club captain.
Bilbao and Real Sociedad are reportedly optimistic they will be able to persuade Azpilicueta to cut his losses and return back to the Basque region of Spain where he was born.
Azpilicueta would have to accept a pay cut in a move back to Spain and it is believed he would be happy to leave Chelsea and move back to Spain if he loses his place in the starting XI at Chelsea.
