Chelsea lost their opening Champions League group game as the Blues were beaten 1-0 at home by Valencia.
It was Frank Lampard’s first game in the Champions League as a manager and it ended in defeat, but that isn’t the full story as Chelsea missed a late penalty that could have salvaged a point for the team.
Rodrigo went behind the Chelsea defence with 16 minutes left and struck past Kepa Arrizabalaga at his near post to put the away side in front.
Chelsea bombed forward in search of an equaliser and had the perfect opportunity when VAR ruled in favour of a penalty decision following a handball from Daniel Wass.
Surprisingly, it was second-half substitute Ross Barkley who rushed to take the ball for the shot ahead of Willian and Jorginho who urged him to let them take it. Barkley refused to heed to their plea and ended up missing the penalty kick. At the end, Chelsea lost the game 1-0.
The defeat marked Chelsea’s first Champions League loss at home since 2016 against Paris Saint-Germain and means Frank Lampard is yet to taste victory as manager in west London.
The loss leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the fans who have come for Barkley and many have asked him to leave the club.
“Barkley needs to leave,” fumed one Chelsea supporter.
Another tweeted: “I don’t feel anything for Barkley other than I feel he needs to leave my club ASAP.”
“Can’t wait to see Ross Barkley leave Chelsea,” added another.
Another Chelsea fan said: “Ross Barkley kindly leave this club.”
