Chelsea boss Frank Lampard named a very young side to face Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup third round clash.
The Blues didn’t show mercy against the League Two side as Chelsea were 7-1 winners on the night, in Lampard’s first win at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea youngster Reece James made his Chelsea debut and was excellent as he scored a goal in the process. The 19-year-old excelled in right-back and got two assists and looked way beyond his age.
Chelsea fans are now crying out for him to start against Brighton this weekend in place of Chelsea captain, Cesar Azpilicueta.
Speaking after the game, Lampard admitted that he was impressed with the team’s performance but also called for caution as some moments went against the team in the first half that saw Grimsby score a goal.
The Chelsea boss said: “Pleasing on lots of levels. Not complete, we gave some minutes to some others who haven’t played and some youngsters improved the team when they came on. Billy Gilmour superb, Marc Guehi solid.
“Now it’s about where they go with this. It says a lot about the academy, the chance to mix the team was something that I had to take up.
“It says that we have good young players, but now it’s about confidence and their levels. I wasn’t happy at half-time, the goal was a disaster, I showed them a video of the danger, and that could cost you.”
