Christian Pulisic failed to feature for three consecutive games before his start in the 7-1 win over Grimsby on Wednesday night.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has preferred Willian and Mason Mount on the wings.

Former Chelsea player Craig Burley believes Pulisic faces a tough battle to establish himself as a Chelsea starter but he has warned the American international against looking for an exit in January.

Burley believes Pulisic should re-evaluate his position in the squad at the end of the season and ask Chelsea for transfer in the summer if nothing changes.

Burley told ESPN: “Wait until the end of the year, and then say – ‘Okay, where are we, where am I with this manager, how long is he gonna be staying? Are they going to sign anybody else?’

“He might play 30 games plus this season. It is not looking likely at the moment – but he might! So I think he should not jump to any hasty January conclusions.

“It is very very early. But the signs at the moment are – it is going to be really tough.”
