Chelsea boss Frank Lampard insisted after Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Valencia on Tuesday night that Ross Barkley is Chelsea’s designated penalty taker.
Barkley missed a late penalty in Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Valencia after turning down the requests of Willian and Jorginho to take the penalty.
According to former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green, Barkley isn’t Chelsea’s best penalty taker.
Green, who was on Chelsea’s books last season, insists Jorginho is the best penalty taker at the club.
Green also believes Barkley shouldn’t have taken the penalty because he didn’t start the game against Valencia.
“Ross was a sub. Unless you have a designated penalty taker like Harry Kane, who comes off the bench and everyone knows he’s taken penalties, then it’s down to the designated penalty taker at the start of the game in my opinion,” Green told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“When you have got someone such as Jorginho, who is so good at taking penalties, it seems strange to take it away from him.
“Ross was fairly insistent. He had taken three this season so far, two in pre-season and one in the Super Cup and scored all three.
“So he is confident enough and backed himself, but if that would have happened in the fifth minute Jorginho would have taken it.
“You saw the look on Jorginho’s face.
“If you are stepping up to take it you should be able to deal with the pressure.
“To miss the target as such is a cardinal sin.
“As a goalkeeper you hate to face Jorginho, I’ve done it many times in training. He just waits for you to go so. As soon as he steps away from it, you feel a bit better there as a keeper.”
