It was a heavy scoreline as Chelsea defeated Grimsby Town 7-1 in the third round of the Carabao Cup tie.

Chelsea were the very dominant side in the game, and Blues boss Frank Lampard handed first team debuts to a number of youngsters.

Reece James made his Chelsea debut and was excellent as he scored a goal in the process. Callum Hudson-Odoi returned from a long injury lay-off, Billy Gilmour ran the show in midfield and Marc Guehi was excellent in centre-back.

Of all the youngsters, Lampard paid credit to Gilmour and Guehi for their performance, while also revealing that he was angry with the team for losing concentration and then conceding the goal scored by Mathew Green.

Lampard mentioned Gilmour and Guehi as the youngsters who impressed him.

The Chelsea boss said: “Pleasing on lots of levels. Not complete, we gave some minutes to some others who haven’t played and some youngsters improved the team when they came on. Billy Gilmour superb, Marc Guehi solid.

“Now it’s about where they go with this. It says a lot about the academy, the chance to mix the team was something that I had to take up.

“It says that we have good young players, but now it’s about confidence and their levels. I wasn’t happy at half-time, the goal was a disaster, I showed them a video of the danger, and that could cost you.”
