Chelsea got their first home league win of the season in the 2-0 victory over Brighton, and it was also the first clean sheet for Frank Lampard’s side in all competitions this season.

It was a very dominant display from Chelsea against the Seagulls, and it was Jorginho who opened the scoring for the Blues shortly after the break, after Mason Mount was fouled in the box.

Jorginho stepped up to confidently dispatch the ball into the net, and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has hailed the Chelsea midfielder as one of the best penalty takers in the league. Merson was also full of praise of the performance the former Napoli midfielder put in.

“I thought Jorginho was absolutely outstanding,” former Arsenal midfielder Merson told Sky Sports.

“What’s helping him is he’s got legs around him. He’s got [Mason] Mount, Willian, [Ross] Barkley, and he just gives them the ball, he can spray it around the pitch.

“He is probably one of the best penalty takers in the league in my opinion, too.”

It wasn’t just Merson who was impressed with his performance, as even Chelsea boss Frank Lampard hailed the performance and character of the 27-year-old, telling the younger players to look up to him.

Speaking about Jorginho, Lampard said: “He is, he’s a leader in his personality and whatever happened last year – I wasn’t here and for whatever reason people made judgements.

“All I can judge is what I see in front of me.

“From pre-season he’s been one of the leaders in the dressing room and on the pitch.

“He wants to win, I know that should be the basics for everyone but to show it in everything you do is important and I think he does that.

“So I’m pleased with Jorgi and again the young players need to look up to that kind of attitude that he has daily.”
