Chelsea young right-back Reece James is yet to make an appearance for the Blues this season.
After an impressive loan spell at Wigan which saw him win Wigan’s Player of the Season and earn a place in the EFL Team of the Year, James was due to join Chelsea for preseason but suffered an ankle ligament injury while representing England in the Toulon Tournament.
The 19 year old returned to training this week and according to Goal, he was involved in a behind closed doors friendly match.
James will step up his return from injury by featuring in the club’s Under-23s match against Brighton. He will reportedly play in another U23 game or two before coming into the first-team squad.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has high hopes for the 19 year old right-back and he was the reason Lampard allowed Davide Zappacosta to leave for Roma on loan over the summer.
Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi will also make his injury return in the U23 game against Brighton on Friday after also missing preseason.
Hudson-Odoi has been out with a ruptured Achilles tendon since late April, with his return coming quicker than many expected after less than five months spent on the sidelines.
