Chelsea youngsters Andreas Christensen, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have been a key part of Frank Lampard’s side so far this season, and the Blues boss is keen on giving youngsters the opportunity to impress at the club.
In the last game against Sheffield United, Lampard gave Fikayo Tomori his first ever Chelsea senior team start and 90 minutes appearance, while Billy Gilmour was also handed a debut.
According to reports, Lampard is also keen on pushing another youngster into the team.
The Daily Star claim Lampard will drop Azpilicueta once 19-year-old Reece James is fit to play. James is currently recovering from an ankle injury, but could rival Azpilicueta for his place.
Azpilicueta has been an important player for Chelsea over the years, since joining the club in 2012, and has so far played every minute of Chelsea’s games this season, but has been criticised for his performance of late.
Azpilicueta was criticised for his performance against Sheffield United on Saturday as he was easily beaten for both of Sheffield United’s goals. He was turned too easily by Enda Stevens for Sheffield United’s firs goal and then Callum Robinson for their second.
Azpilicueta was also careless in possession. The Spaniard gave the ball away 20 times against Sheffield United and with Lampard wanting Chelsea to play out of the back and be comfortable in possession, Azpilicueta isn’t the right-back Chelsea needs.
The game against Sheffield United wasn’t the only game Azpilicueta has played badly this season. He was at fault for two goals in the 4-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, and was also at fault for Leicester’s equaliser in the 1-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Will it be a wise decision for Reece James to take over Azpilicueta’s spot?
