Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu was on the winning side as Wales defeated Azerbaijan 2-1 in Cardiff. Ampadu who’s currently on loan at RB Leipzig, played the first 75 minutes in midfield.
The score was 1-1 when he was taken off – with Azerbaijan having scored a first-half own-goal but then equalised on the hour. It was Gareth Bale who rescued the three points for Wales with a late goal that took Wales up to third in their group and keep their Euro 2020 qualification hopes alive.
Wales head coach Ryan Giggs has revealed that he was impressed with Ampadu’s performance and sees the 18-year-old as a leader.
Giggs said: “He’s hardly played in seven or eight months and puts in a mature performance like that. It’s best how to manage Ethan. It’s very tough for him to get through ninety minutes. It’s the fittest he’s been for a long time.
“He’s a future leader and it’s great to see him get minutes on the pitch. It’s my hope that he’ll get more games and he’ll get better.”
Up next for Wales is a home game against Belarus on Monday.
