Marcos Alonso played an important role in Chelsea’s 2016/17 Premier League title triumph under Antonio Conte, scoring seven goals and instantly becoming a fan favourite.
Since joining Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016, the 28 year old has featured 121 times for the Blues, scoring 18 goals.
Alonso has lost his place in the starting XI under Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, with Emerson now Chelsea’s first choice left-back. Alonso has made just one appearance from the bench this season.
Alonso was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer and it has now been revealed why the transfer failed.
According to The Athletic via Daily Star, Atletico expressed a strong interest in signing Alonso during summer transfer window but Chelsea refused to sell with Lampard’s appointment imminent at the time and a two-window transfer ban in place.
Chelsea would have been unable to sign a replacement for Alonso if the left-back was allowed to join Atletico Madrid.
Emerson has started the new season impressively, staring every outing under Lampard so far and cementing his place as a first-team regular.
Emerson made just two appearances in his debut season for Chelsea before making 27 appearances last season under Maurizio Sarri, with ten of those appearances coming in the league as Sarri preferred Alonso at left-back.
