Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen changed his shirt number this season from the No.27 he’d occupied for the last two years to No.4, which was vacant after David Luiz left for Arsenal this summer.
According to Daily Star, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard advised Christensen to take the vacant No.4 shirt.
The report claims Lampard wanted Christensen to change his squad number to mark “a fresh start” at Stamford Bridge this season – echoing the advice he gave Mason Mount in their time together at Derby.
Mount spent last season on loan at Derby under Lampard and he was reportedly told by Lampard to ditch the No.19 shirt he wore at Vitesse Arnhem in favour of No.8.
Mount had an impressive loan spell at Derby and the young midfielder has forced his way into the Chelsea team this season, scoring two goals in four Premier League appearances.
Christensen has made 69 appearances for Chelsea over the last two seasons, but has failed to hold down a regular starting spot at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard is reportedly hoping the mental tactic of changing shirt number that worked with Mount will also work with Christensen.
