Marcos Alonso has been second choice to Emerson Palmieri in the left-back position, as Frank Lampard seems to favour the Brazilian ahead of the Spaniard.
While Alonso has been a loyal servant at Chelsea and his success under Antonio Conte is well documented, the past year hasn’t been too good for him.
Alonso’s struggle started last season under Maurizio Sarri as he lost form under the Sarri-ball tactician, but Sarri kept playing the Spaniard no matter what.
Frank Lampard must have kept a keen eye on proceedings, and he immediately made Emerson his first choice left back after he took over the team, and Alonso was made to sit on the bench.
Fortunately for Alonso, Emerson has struggled with injury and it has given him chance to prove himself and the Spaniard has been great.
The left-back showed how good he can be as he registered yet another assist vs Southampton after his pass to N’Golo Kante for the Blues’ third goal.
Should Alonso retain his shirt even after Emerson returns from injury?
