Chelsea’s defence was poor and porous at the start of the season, and Frank Lampard’s side conceded an average of over 2 goals per game and clean sheets were just far off from the Chelsea team.
Frank Lampard rotated his backline and even played three at the back in some games to no avail as Chelsea’s defence continued to struggle.
One Chelsea player who was always at the receiving end was the team captain Cesar Azpilicueta as his performances were just a far cry from the Azpilicueta we’ve come to know and love.
The Spaniard received criticisms from pundits and even Chelsea fans, and this has seen him improve tremendously over the past month and he’s now back to his level.
Chelsea have now had two clean sheets in a row and Azpilicueta expressed his frustration at his own form at the start of the season and how he worked hard to get back into form.
“I have this passion for defending and not conceding goals,” he said. “Obviously at the beginning of the season we were conceding a lot of goals so I was not pleased at all and I was not happy with myself. My job is to keep clean sheets and help the team.
“I know I got criticism, which was fair, because I was not at my level. My job is to work hard in training sessions, to work on my game, to keep improving and obviously I am very pleased to keep two clean sheets in a row. I am happy with the three points against a very strong side.”
