It was a difficult game between two evenly matched sides at the Johan Cruyff ArenA as Chelsea defeated Ajax to go top of the group.
It was a tough defeat for Ajax as Quincy Promes had a goal ruled out for the narrowest of offside calls and Edson Alvarez hit the post for the home side.
Chelsea also had their own close chances with Michy Batshuayi missing what should have been a tap in shortly after coming on. However, the 26-year-old Belgian striker won’t make the same mistake twice as he blasted into the top corner for Chelsea’s winner four minutes from time.
Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind currently at Ajax blamed his teammates for the defeat after the game and believes that they should have at least gotten a draw.
“We were sloppy at times,” he said. “We can blame ourselves because that is something we are normally very strong at. It was a struggle and we fought. Chelsea are a top team and we didn’t make it easy for them. It was a 0-0 match. That result would have been more appropriate I think.”
Blind admitted before the game that he was impressed with Chelsea’s progress under Frank Lampard.
“About Chelsea, they are doing well, their philosophy, like the manager said they want to play from the back, they play different attacking football with a lot of youngsters and that’s something nice to see.
“If you’re looking at that, it’s good. But if you’re talking about United then I’m not happy about that of course.”
