It was a vital win for Chelsea at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday night as Chelsea defeated Lille 2-1 in a very crucial Champions League group stage game.
Chelsea had lost our opening game to Valencia at Stamford Bridge and needed to beat Lille to keep hopes alive of making it through the group stages, and there were sighs of relief as Willian scored a late one to seal the three points for Chelsea.
One big name that was absent from the squad was Christian Pulisic. The £58m signing failed to even make the bench as he has drifted out of the Frank Lampard’s first team.
Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has sent words of encouragement to the young American to keep working hard and he will sail through at the end.
Azpilicueta said after the Lille game: “As the manager said, we are a group, we are all important on this long path, we are only in October. Sometimes the manager has to make decisions, but I see him [Pulisic] working hard in training.
“What I can say is to encourage him to keep working, because we know it is a new country, a new team, a bit of time of adaption is needed. I see him with the character working hard in training, and I’m sure he will be very important for us for the season.”
