Emerson Palmieri had played second fiddle to Marcos Alonso since signing for the Blues, but the Italy international has won a place in the Chelsea team under current boss Frank Lampard.
Emerson had been Chelsea’s first choice left-back this season until he got caught up with injury.
At the start of the season, one thing was clear: Emerson was Lampard’s preferred choice as left-back. Fortunately for Alonso, Emerson has struggled with injury and it has given him chance to prove himself and the Spaniard has been great.
Alonso has been so good that he registered yet another assist vs Southampton after his pass to N’Golo Kante for the Blues’ third goal in the 4-1 win at the St Mary’s ground.
Stats from the Southampton clash prove how good Alonso has been of late.
According to stats gathered by Whoscored.com, Alonso had 81 touches throughout the game – exactly as many as Jorginho who controlled the game from midfield.
Alonso was also good defensively as he won 5 aerial duels against the Saints. The Spaniard also made a total of 5 tackles and 4 clearances – the highest number among all Chelsea players vs Southampton.
While Alonso and Emerson will be faced with a heated competition for places, Chelsea will definitely be the winner as two good players push themselves to the limit.
