Chelsea have become one of the most successful clubs in Europe since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.
It could have been a different story for the Blues as Abramovich couldn’t decide whether to buy Chelsea or Tottenham.
The Russian billionaire consulted then England boss Sven Goran Eriksson to help him make a decision.
Eriksson urged Roman Abramovich to snub Tottenham and buy Chelsea to ensure a fast track to Premier League success.
At the time, Chelsea’s squad included the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eriksson saw that as a recipe for success.
“In 2003 Roman wanted to buy a club in Russia. I went with him to Moscow to see the facilities at two or three other clubs,” Eriksson told The Sun.
“But then he changed his mind and said he wanted to buy a club in London. He was thinking Chelsea or Tottenham.
“He phoned me and said, ‘Who shall I buy?’
“I said if you want to win the league then Chelsea – because you only have to change half the team.
“At that time with Tottenham maybe you would have had to change the whole team.”
Abramovich will be glad he made the decision to buy Chelsea instead of Tottenham as the Blues have won 16 trophies including the Champions League since he bought the club in 2003 while Tottenham have won just the League Cup in 2008 in that time.
