Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand knows what it meant to face Didier Drogba. The former Manchester United centre-back played against the Chelsea legend many times in the Premier League and Champions League, and he knows firsthand how much of a powerful striker Drogba was.
Ferdinand has now admitted that he sees a lot of Drogba traits in Chelsea’s young striker Tammy Abraham.
Abraham has been in good form and scored his 8th goal of the campaign as Chelsea defeated Lille 2-1 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Abraham received a difficult ball from Fikayo Tomori, controlled it calmly and slotted it past Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignana.
For Rio Ferdinand, the 22-year-old striker is massively improving and has features of the legend Didier Drogba.
“I saw elements in Tammy’s game that I haven’t seen as much as I would have liked to before,” said the former England defender,” Ferdinand said speaking as a pundit for BT Sport.
“His hold-up play, coming to the ball, bringing others into play. There were some balls that came into him that were Didier Drogba-esque.
“I think he’s developing nicely, he’s scoring goals, he’s scoring different types of goals and I think he’s a threat.
“This touch here (for his goal), when this ball comes to him, it’s a magnificent touch because it’s not the perfect ball. He adjusts his feet beautifully and the finish, the calmness to do it like that.”
