Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori must pinch his skin at times as a reminder that what’s happening in his career is real at the moment.
From playing for Championship side Derby County on loan last season, the 21-year-old is now a key centre-back for Chelsea and has already earned a call up to the England national team.
Tomori has proven his onion even when up against the best as he did against Mohamed Salah, and he was again superb when faced with Ajax’s buzzing team.
Speaking before the game with Ajax, former Chelsea star Joe Cole was full of praise for Fikayo Tomori and likened the young defender to former Blue William Gallas.
“He reminds me a lot of the young [William] Gallas,” Cole said on BT Sport.
“For me his development has been absolutely perfect. He’s had his whole youth at Chelsea in the academy, then he’s gone on loan to Derby.
“The first six months is under Frank, then Ashley Cole’s come in to play next to him, and Ashley used to speak to him every game, you couldn’t think of a better way to educate him to become a top centre-half.
“You look at young centre-halves and you look at what they’re going to be like two or three years down the line and he will get even better.”
