Christian Pulisic signed up for Chelsea for £58m and it was expected that the 21-year-old will walk his way into the Chelsea first team after his mammoth transfer fee.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard gave Pulisic a couple of chances at the start of the season, but the young American failed to impress.
Subsequently, the Chelsea manager reduced him to a bench role and he even failed to make a matchday squad as he found himself fourth in a pecking order that includes Willian, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Pedro.
Lampard had one message for Pulisic – work hard on the pitch and impress me on the training ground to get into my team. Pulisic was frustrated during the last international break and even broke down in tears. However, he returned strongly and has now produced three straight match winning performances.
His game changing substitute appearances against Newcastle and Ajax earned him a starting spot in the starting lineup to face Burnley on Saturday evening, and Pulisic bagged a hat-trick in that game.
Speaking after the game, Lampard explained why he has held back in putting Pulisic in the starting line-up, revealing that it has brought out the best in the American.
“He had a week’s break this summer,” the Chelsea boss said.
“He arrived for a big price and wanted to come straight back in but at the same time why am I going to throw him in?
“So I have to do it in the right way and get the best out of him. I’m delighted for him.”
