Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has hailed Chelsea’s style of play under current boss Frank Lampard compared to the Sarri-ball that was introduced by Maurizio Sarri last season.

Under Sarri, Chelsea tended to have lots of possession of the ball which didn’t translate to goals or chance creation, but Lampard’s Chelsea are exciting and dangerous at the same time, playing quick passing football and opening team’s defence at will.

According to Merson, Sarri’s Chelsea team just depended on Eden Hazard to perform and any day he didn’t perform, the Blues were doomed.

“I think Frank Lampard has been outstanding – they’re playing football as good as anyone,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“When I watched Chelsea last year, it was dire in a way. I know they won the Europa League final, should have beaten Man City in the Carabao Cup final, and they came third in the Premier League, but the football wasn’t great.

“Now, the football is fantastic and everybody is joining in. Last season, you gave the ball to Eden Hazard, hope he did something and if he had an off day, Chelsea had no chance. Now, everybody is chipping in and they’re all kids, enthusiastic and putting in performances.”
