Christian Pulisic joined Chelsea in a £58m deal, but the star of the American team had found it difficult to cope in England. In fact he had even lost his place in the Chelsea team, with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard wanting more from him.
Pulisic had bemoaned his lack of playing time since coming to Chelsea, and before he Newcastle clash he had only played ten minutes of Premier League football for the Blues since the end of August. Pulisic has only played for 90 minutes just twice this season, and Lampard’s message to the young American has always been ‘impress me’.
Lampard said before the Newcastle clash: “Christian, as with every player in the squad, needs to work hard in training, keep improving in training, see the direction we’re going, be a part of it, and show what you can do on a match day, and all the players are the same there.
“It is [easy to forget his age]. You can look beyond that because he came through at a very young age at Dortmund and huge credit to him for that. It’s amazing to come through that. He was playing at a top level team at Dortmund.”
With Chelsea finding it difficult to go past a rigid Newcastle defence, Lampard’s first throw of the dice (Kovacic’s introduction was forced) was to bring on Pulisic in place of Mason Mount who failed to impress against the Magpies. Pulisic answered his manager’s call by turning the game around for Chelsea.
After troubling the Newcastle defence, he made a decisive contribution by combining well with Hudson-Odoi to create space for Alonso to fire home with just 17 minutes remaining.
And now again, Captain America has proven that he can be the star of this Chelsea team as he changed the game yet again to give Chelsea the vital three points away at Ajax.
Just like in the game against Newcastle, Pulisic was electrifying and his introduction changed the game for Chelsea. Ajax defence couldn’t cope with his skill and turn of pace, and the American laid on an assist for Michy to score the winner as Chelsea got the three points that will boost our quest to qualify from the group and even qualify as leaders.
Pulisic has now answered Lampard’s call, and it’s time for the Chelsea boss to fulfill his promise to the former Borussia Dortmund star.
