No one gave Chelsea a chance at the start of the season, as the Blues were hit with a transfer ban and also lost star player Eden Hazard. The appointment of rookie manager Frank Lampard whose only job experience was in the Championship as Derby County manager, didn’t aid Chelsea’s cause in the eyes of most pundits.
No pundit tipped Chelsea to finish in the top four, and the opening day defeat to Manchester United even made matters worse. But Frank Lampard’s side has continuously made progress, and now Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher who has previously predicted that Chelsea won’t make top four has changed his mind about the Blues final position this season.
Carragher was unimpressed with Monday night’s game between Manchester United and Liverpool, and he revealed that Chelsea have more quality than the two sides.
He told Sky Sports: “The one team looking at that tonight who will be encouraged is Chelsea.
“At the start of the season, I thought Chelsea might struggle to get into the top-four.
“It will still be a fight but even in these early stages, they have more quality than what we have seen from these two teams.”
Already, Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to make top four and believes that Frank Lampard’s side is better than what most people think.
Merson told Sky Sports after the 2-0 win over Brighton: “There were phases in the game where they played very well.
“In between those goals there were a lot of nerves from Chelsea and you could feel the nervousness in the stands from the fans.
“The fans got nervous, the players got nervous but when they got that second goal they started passing it around again.
“Every week they get another Premier League game under their belt and when you win football matches that breeds confidence.
“It was stability at the start of the season and now you’re thinking ‘this could be top four’.
“They’ve got some very, very good players, Chelsea are a lot stronger than people think.”
