Chelsea youngster Reece James has only recently returned from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action for months.
James missed the whole of Chelsea’s pre-season after a wonderful season on loan at Wigan Athletic, and the 19-year-old is highly rated at the club.
Reece James was one of the stars in the 7-1 bashing of Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup third round tie and he also featured in Chelsea’s Champions League clash against Lille away from home, as he started the game as a right wing-back.
James has revealed that his target is to improve on his fitness and also improve his form.
“I’m only just getting back into the swing of things,” the defender said.
“My first step was to get back fit and now I’m here, I just need to keep improving gradually week-in, week-out. Getting injured is all part of the game and you just have to build yourself back up to get strong and fit.”
James is expected to act as understudy to Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta who has revealed that he will try to help the youngster reach his desired heights.
Azpilicueta said: “Reece is a player I have followed and he had an amazing spell at Wigan [on loan].
“He showed his quality, he is a very strong boy with a good attitude. I will try to help him with whatever he needs.
“I am here to help the team and even if he is a right-back and I can play right-back, we are players who can play in different positions. I am here to help as I am with all the young lads and hopefully he can be an important player for this big team.”
