Christian Pulisic hasn’t shown enough to prove he should be starting ahead of Willian.
Captain America has made just one appearance in Chelsea’s last five games and some fans are criticising Chelsea boss Frank Lampard for playing Willian instead of Pulisic.
Pulisic started three of Chelsea’s first four Premier League games and also the Super Cup game against Liverpool before losing his place in the team to Willian.
Here is why Willian deserves his place in the starting XI ahead of Pulisic (both players have started three times for Chelsea in the league so we compare their three starts):
Lampard wants his forwards to press and also help out in defence. In his three starts for Chelsea in the league, Willian has won eight tackles and made two interceptions compared to Pulisic’s five tackles and two interceptions in three starts.
Every manager expects his players to keep the ball better and that is something Pulisic has failed to do. The American has been dispossessed 13 times in his three starts compared to Willian, who has lost the ball just twice.
Willian has been fouled eight times which means he makes our opponents uncomfortable compared to Pulisic who has been fouled five times.
Willian is shooting more (8) compared to Pulisic who has had just three shots. Willian has scored once for Chelsea against Brighton while Pulisic is yet to score. Willian has had 7 bad controls compared to Pulisic’s 9.
It hasn’t been all bad for Pulisic in comparison with Willian though. The American has completed more dribbles (6) compared to Willian (5). Pulisic has also made more key passes (3) compared to Willian (1).
