The Blues lost 2-1 to Manchester City on Saturday at the Etihad despite scoring first through N’Golo Kante.

The game against Manchester City showed the Blues have progressed under Frank Lampard this season despite the loss.

Here are 3 signs Chelsea have progressed under Lampard despite the loss to Manchester United:

1. Looking at this fixture in August, no Chelsea fan would have expected Chelsea to come into this match ahead of Manchester City in the Premier League table. Despite the loss, we are just two points off the defending champions and are comfortable in the top four, seven points ahead of fifth-placed Wolves.

2. Last season under Maurizio Sarri, no Chelsea fan expected the Blues to get a result at the Etihad. Even though we didn’t expect the 6-0 bashing, we definitely didn’t even expect a draw against City last season. Heading to the Etihad on Saturday, Chelsea fans were optimistic we would get at least a draw against Manchester City. The increased level of expectation shows Chelsea have progressed under Lampard this season.

3. Manchester City were always favourites because they have the better players and have been under Guardiola for years now but Chelsea could have easily won the game if we have removed mistakes from our game. We even had more possession than Manchester City, something no team has achieved before.

Getting a result at the Etihad would have been a bonus for Chelsea. We lost our best player to Real Madrid and couldn’t strengthen the team due to the transfer ban. Lampard’s Chelsea are obviously exceeding expectations. As the players get used to Lampard’s methods and the club is able to get the players the manager wants, Chelsea would be able to challenge for titles once more.
