Arsenal are currently struggling at the moment, and the Gunners boss Unai Emery is under pressure to turn things around.
Emery is fighting to save his job at the Emirates with his Arsenal team struggling for form and have won just one of their last five Premier League games. The Gunners even dropped points in their Europa League clash at Vitoria on Wednesday.
After leading Arsenal to fifth place last season, Emery was tipped to do more this season as he signed Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and Dani Ceballos during the summer transfer window, with David Luiz a transfer deadline day signing.
Charlie Nicholas has now revealed that Arsenal should have instead signed former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill who became a free agent at the end of last season. The 33-year-old was eventually signed by Crystal Palace after his contract with the Blues ended.
“Arsenal don’t sign personalities,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Sadly I have to go way back to David Dein and he would sit down with Arsene Wenger and ask what kind of character he was signing. That’s gone now.
“It’s as if Arsenal sign players because they are desperate.
“Why not – and I don’t know how much he would have cost – go and get Chris Smalling from Manchester United in the summer before he went to Roma?
“Because he’d be better than what they had. They could’ve had Gary Cahill from Chelsea and sat him in the defence.
“He is better than what they have and is also a leader, but they missed out.”
