The Blues have won six consecutive Premier League games following the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Asked if his Chelsea team is exceeding expectation following this season after our sixth consecutive Premier League victory, Lampard said: “I don’t know. It is hard with the expectations at the start of the season was belief in the younger players because I felt they deserved a chance but there’s always a question mark that you don’t know until you see them there.

“There’s that first hurdle when you see the bounce when they come in and then they have to sustain that. At the moment they are sustaining with Tammy, Mason, Fikayo and Reece who has just come in there.

“When you look at the younger players they are showing they deserve to be at this level. I am proud of the squad that we have got but I also realise it is just a snapshot in what is the big picture of the long term future here. It is a relative snapshot of the season, we are about a third of the way through and we are in a good position but we know this league can punish you if you drop off.

“So we need to get even better than that. If we want to build something over a long period of time here then we have got so much improvement to do because the gap was too big last year between us and the top two. So we want to close that.”
