Jose Mourinho dented his relationship with Chelsea fans when he chose to accept the Manchester United job in 2016. Since then, Mourinho’s relationship with his love club Chelsea has gone cold.
Chelsea legend Ashley Cole who also made a move from Chelsea rivals Arsenal to join the Blues in 2006 has revealed his shock at Mourinho’s appointment as Tottenham boss.
“I’m a little bit shocked, to be honest,” Cole told talkSPORT. “Obviously, he was a Chelsea man and then went to Man United… and now he’s back.”
Cole was further pressed on Chelsea’s rivalry with Tottenham, but he added: “People talk about rivalry, but at the end of the day, he wants a job and wants to get back into work. It’s a great job for him to take.”
“I appreciate the work he did at Chelsea and what he tried to do at Man United, and this is going to be a tough test for him. It is something different for him. But I think he will do well; he is a great coach and a great manager.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy stressing that Mourinho’s strong track record of silverware was what made him an ideal choice.
“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football,” Levy said.
“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached.
“We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
