Mateo Kovacic is having a good season at Chelsea, and the Croatia international has been one of the stars in the Chelsea midfield.
Kovacic has formed a great partnership with Jorginho and he has been hailed by how much he has improved this season.
Kovacic has credited his performance this season to the free role he’s enjoying under Frank Lampard.
Kovacic had previously said: “The manager has given me more freedom to get up and support the attacks, I can collect the ball and drive forward. I feel good, I have a great connection with the manager and his coaching team and of course with my team-mates.
“I feel better to be a Chelsea player, compared to last season when I was only on loan. I feel more confident, I’m more relaxed because I know this is my home now and I feel really good.
“I think I can still show more in my play because I know I can still improve for the team, but overall I’m very happy.”
In his press conference ahead of the Ajax game, Lampard was asked to comment on words from Kovacic that he is being allowed to play with more freedom this season.
Lampard responded: “You can call it freedom but it is just how I want us to play.
“Particularly in some games we have had to break teams down and we need to be able to move, we can’t be too predictable and rigid in our positions.
“There is freedom to interchange, and the three who played at Watford can do all the roles so I am happy for them to be fluid. I also want them to be positive in their play and play forward passes when they are on, and go by people if that is one of their attributes, like Kovacic has to travel with the ball at pace.
“It is hugely important in terms of how I want the team to play to be able to accept the ball in uncomfortable areas.”
